Larnaca International Airport
The Thursday Murder ClubLarnaca International Airport is the documented point of Gianni Gunduz’s return to Cyprus in 2000, and the crucial link in an account of how he may have vanished. In the investigation, the airport is less a destination than a threshold: Gianni arrives, then leaves no trace.
The Recorded Arrival
While questioning Costas Gunduz, Chris Hudson cites records placing Gianni at Larnaca International Airport on 17 May 2000, at about two in the afternoon. From that arrival onward, Chris says, investigators found no trace of him. The precise date and approximate time make the airport a firm point in an otherwise unexplained disappearance.
The Proposed Escape Route
Joe Kyprianou describes the airport as the first stop in a possible escape arranged through Costas. In his account, Gianni could arrive, have Costas’s people collect him, discard his passport, and obtain a replacement under a new identity before returning to Northern Cyprus and resuming business. Costas denies that anything happened, so the airport’s role in this route remains an allegation rather than an established account of what followed.
An Ordinary Detail at the End of the Interview
After Costas declines to confirm the theory, Chris recalls having looked up the airport earlier: it has a Starbucks and a Burger King. Noting that Burger Kings seem to be becoming less common, he decides it is time to leave. The mundane amenities contrast with the airport’s weight in the investigation—as the place where Gianni was last officially located and where, according to Joe’s explanation, a change of identity could have begun.
